Capabilities

Connecting layer — strategy to portfolio

The connecting layer of the platform, part of the synthesis at the main canvas and not an analysis worksheet with its own tabs for issues and analysis. On the main canvas, capabilities are one line with the progress. A capability is an organisational ability: something the organisation must be able to do to make its strategy happen.

What it contains

  • A register of capabilities, clustered and tagged by domain.
  • Two views of the same model: the capability model (the table, with a detail panel per capability) and the Cap-map (the model at a glance, per cluster).
  • Per capability a current and desired maturity level (scale 1 to 5, from initial to optimised).
  • The difference between them is a gap. A capability whose level has not been filled in yet does not count as "at target level": it is shown in grey, as "not yet filled in".
  • To a gap you link the initiatives that must close it.

Why this is the bridge

This worksheet completes the chain:

strategic theme → required capability → gap → evidence from the worksheets
↘ initiative → KPI

This makes it demonstrable why an initiative exists and what the judgement on a gap is based on.

What you do yourself

You manage the register, review AI proposals, set maturity levels and link capabilities to strategic themes and KPIs, and gaps to initiatives. If you close the worksheet right after typing, your input is saved; if saving fails, the worksheet stays open with a notice.

What the AI does

The model is generated in one go on the Strategy worksheet (Capability model tab), from the strategic themes and the dossier, in six steps: candidates, deduplicating, harmonising, clustering, substantiating and assigning domains. In doing so the AI actively deduplicates: if a similar capability already exists, it links that instead of creating a variant. An organisation usually has fifteen to twenty core capabilities, not a hundred.

There is no AI on this worksheet itself: here you manage the established model. Generating again starts with a reset (Reset model), with Restore previous version as a safety net. What the AI proposes, you only adopt when you accept it.

What it delivers

A capability register with visible gaps, linked to the change portfolio. This worksheet has no report of its own: the capability model is a chapter of the Strategy report.
